The Russian-born German soprano Diana Schnürpel is one of the most distinguished representatives of the dramatic coloratura soprano repertoire of her generation. In recent years, she has established herself at major European opera houses, particularly in the role of the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”.
She initially studied piano in Lipetsk. Concurrently, from 2001 to 2005, she studied voice at the Moscow Academy of Choral Art, continuing her studies at the University of Music and Theater Leipzig under Prof. Regina Werner-Dietrich, where she earned her diploma in 2010. She was a finalist in the Leipzig Lortzing Competition as well as the International Grandi Voci Opera Singing Competition in Salzburg and received third prize at the International Jószef Simándy Singing Competition in Szeged.
Diana Schnürpel also established herself early on as a concert and lieder singer. Engagements have taken her to the MDR Radio Choir, the Ruhr Piano Festival, and concerts featuring works by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Handel, Mozart, Richard Strauss, and Othmar Schoeck. Critics consistently highlight her interpretation of the art song and concert repertoire for its exceptional text interpretation, structural clarity, and tonal nuance. Her recent participation in a CD recording featuring orchestral songs by Oliver Gruhn and songs by Richard Strauss completed by him has garnered significant attention.
From 2016 to 2021, Diana Schnürpel was a member of the ensemble at Theater Luzern. There she developed a wide-ranging repertoire with roles such as the Queen of the Night, Gepopo, and Venus in “Le Grand Macabre,” Euridice in “Orfeo ed Euridice,” Maria Stuarda, Rosina in “Il barbiere di Siviglia,” and the Little Fox in “The Cunning Little Vixen.”
Guest engagements have taken her to venues including the German National Theater Weimar, the State Theater Braunschweig, the Graz Opera, the Klagenfurt City Theater, the Salzburg State Theater, and the Detmold State Theater. In addition, she recently made successful debuts at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Komische Oper Berlin, the Ständetheater Prague, the Hamburg State Opera, and the Theater Basel—in each case as the Queen of the Night. Further debuts will take her to the Volksoper Vienna and the Teatr Wielki Opera Narodowa in Warsaw.
Diana Schnürpel is a prize winner of the Quebec Music Competition and Grand Champion of the 2021 Quebec Music Competition in the Voice category. She has also won prizes at the King’s Peak International Music Competition and the MAP International Music Competition in the Voice and Chamber Duo categories. For her interpretation of Franz Schubert’s “Erlkönig,” she received a Platinum Award at the Global International Music Competition.
Diana Schnürpel is a scholarship recipient of the Thuringia Cultural Foundation.
