Helena Cánovas Parés, music teacher and freelance composer, was born in 1994 in Tona, Spain. She completed a Bachelor's and two Master's degrees in composition at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón and at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln with Markus Hechtle and Prof. Michael Beil. In 2016 she was Artist in Residence at the Etopia Centro de Arte y Tecnología in Zaragoza. In 2019 she received the scholarship Beca a la Creació Artística Ciutat de Vic and is a scholarship holder of the Akademie Musiktheater Heute of the Deutsche Bank Foundation from 2022 to 2024. In 2021 she won the Carmen Mateu Young Artists European Award as an opera composer and received commissions for the Festival de Peralada, Gran Teatre del Liceu and Teatro Real de Madrid. She has also carried out composition commissions for various festivals and institutions such as the Cologne festivals Acht Brücken and SPARK, the ensems festival in Valencia and many others. Her interest in addressing young audiences has led her to various projects as a composer, such as "Stargate Prohaska" (Theater Bonn 2019/20) or "Das Mädchen" (Theater Bielefeld 2019/20). Furthermore, she has been conducting workshops on composition and new music for several years - in particular, she has been a regular guest at the Theater Bonn for educational projects. Since 2019, she has also been the artistic director of the AvantGarten Festival in Liedberg.
At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Helena Cánovas Parés has been engaged as a theatre pedagogue since the end of 2022.
