The heroic and character baritone Martin Gantner was born in Freiburg. His repertoire includes roles such as Telramund (“Lohengrin”), Amfortas and Klingsor (“Parsifal”), Sixtus Beckmesser (“Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg”), Kurwenal (“Tristan und Isolde”), Wolfram von Eschenbach (“Tannhäuser”), Gunther (“Götterdämmerung”), Barak (“Die Frau ohne Schatten”), Herr von Faninal (“Der Rosenkavalier”), Jochanaan (“Salome”), the Music Teacher (“Ariadne auf Naxos”), Don Pizarro (“Fidelio”), Dr. Schön (“Lulu”), Gyges in Zemlinsky’s “King Kandaules,” as well as the title roles in Hindemith’s “Cardillac”, Krenek’s “The Dictator” and Ullmann’s “The Emperor of Atlantis”.
Guest engagements have taken him to, among others, to the Bavarian State Opera, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the Hamburg State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Semperoper Dresden, the Opéra national de Paris, the Vienna State Opera, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Los Angeles Opera, the San Francisco Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam, the Zurich Opera House, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, the Theater an der Wien, the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, the New National Theatre Tokyo, and the Salzburg and Bayreuth Festivals.
In the concert repertoire, his focus includes Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde”, “Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen”, and “Kindertotenlieder”; Brahms’s Requiem; Britten’s “War Requiem” and “St. Matthew Passion”; as well as Mendelssohn’s “Elijah” and “Paulus”.
In 2005, he was named a Bavarian Kammersänger in Munich. At the Stuttgart State Opera, following his roles as Friedrich von Telramund in “Lohengrin” and the baritone part in “Das Lied von der Erde,” Martin Gantner appeared as Barak in “Die Frau ohne Schatten” and as Ottokar in “Der Freischütz”. In addition to Count Danilo (“The Merry Widow”) in the 2024.25 season at the Zurich Opera House, Martin Gantner made two further important role debuts in his repertoire at the Stuttgart State Opera in the 2025.26 season: the title role in “Rigoletto” and Hans Sachs in the new production of “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.” It is in this very role that Martin Gantner is appearing as a guest artist this season in Daniel Kramer’s production.
