Nicholas Brownlee

Bass-baritone Nicholas Brownlee began his professional career as a member of the Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program at LA Opera and is a graduate of the University of South Alabama and Rice University. He is the 2025 recipient of the prestigious Richard Tucker Award, First Prize winner of the Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition, winner of the Zarzuela Prize at Operalia, and Grand Prize Winner of The Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition. The bass-baritone has performed at many of the world’s leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Opéra National de Paris, the Vienna State Opera, the Dutch National Opera, the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, the Frankfurt Opera, the Zurich Opera House, the Bavarian State Opera, the Santa Fe Opera, the Teatro de São Carlos, the LA Opera, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, the Bayreuth Festival, and the Leipzig Opera. In the 2025/26 season, Brownlee will make his debut at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in “Salome” (Strauss) and plans to record the same opera with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería. He will return to the Bavarian State Opera in a new production of “Die Walküre” (Wagner) taking on the role of Wotan. At the Bayreuth Festival, he will appear in the title role of “Der fliegende Holländer” and can be seen again in “Salome” at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía. At the Frankfurt Opera, he will appear in “Peter Grimes” (Britten), “Tosca” (Puccini), and “Tristan und Isolde” (Wagner). On the concert stage, he will make his debut with the Houston Symphony Orchestra and return to the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, he will perform at the 16th Opera Gala for the German AIDS Foundation.
