Stefanie Schaefer

Stefanie Schaefer was born in Frankfurt/Main. She trained as a C-level church musician while still at school and then completed a degree in vocal pedagogy at Dr Hoch's Conservatory and the University of Music and Performing Arts in her home city. She also received important artistic impulses through masterclasses with Brigitte Fassbaender. The mezzo-soprano's career began in the opera studio of the Wiesbaden State Theatre, followed by permanent engagements at the Wuppertal Opera House, the Darmstadt State Theatre, the Erfurt Theatre and the Karlsruhe State Theatre. Guest contracts have taken her, who has been freelancing since 2016, to numerous German opera houses, including the Frankfurt Opera, the Mannheim National Theatre, the Aalto-Musiktheater Essen, the Braunschweig, Mainz, Kassel, Oldenburg and Schwerin State Theatres and the Stuttgart State Opera. She has also performed at various festivals and at Zurich Opera House, where she appeared as Larina in Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" in 2023. In 2018, she made her debut as Boulotte in Offenbach's "Bluebeard the Knight" at the Komische Oper Berlin and has been closely associated with the theatre ever since. Her repertoire, which includes all the major roles in her field, ranges from baroque to contemporary music. Stefanie Schaefer, who has worked with conductors such as Pablo Carignani, Sylvain Cambreling, Toshiuki Kamioka, Eliahu Inbal, Christoph Spering and Stefan Szoltes, is also a sought-after interpreter in the concert repertoire with her wide-ranging repertoire. In addition to her stage work, she coaches renowned choirs, holds masterclasses and has also been a lecturer in singing at Dr Hoch's Conservatory in Frankfurt/Main since 2021.
In the 2023/24 season, she will make her role and house debut at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein as The Old Buryja in Janáček's "Jenůfa".
