Programme
20 Minutes Backstage
What actually goes on behind the scenes at an opera house? At the Art:walk Festival, we invite you to join us for short backstage tours. Every 20 minutes, we’ll take you through areas that are normally off-limits to the public.
The tours offer brief, in-depth insights into the workings of a major opera house and reveal just how much craftsmanship, organisation and attention to detail go on behind the scenes. It is precisely the concise format, with just one destination per tour, that makes it so appealing: focused, surprising and right at the heart of the action.
Noon to 4 pm, meeting point: stage entrance, Ludwig-Zimmermann-Straße
Participation is only possible with a counting ticket, which holders of an Art:walk Festival ticket can collect from the information stand in front of the Opera House.
Please note: Unfortunately, the guided tours are not accessible to people with disabilities.

Pop-up theatre – drop-in sessions with the TMD
The Düsseldorf Theatre Museum preserves the memory of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. Normally, the archive holdings are only accessible by appointment – but for the Art:Walk Festival, selected materials are now returning to the opera house, their place of origin.
Usually, the artistic production takes place at the opera house, whilst the physical traces of this art subsequently find their way into the TMD’s collection. There they are carefully archived and later made available to theatre historians or curious private researchers. During the festival, you’ll have the special opportunity to discover this world of archives right on site. The TMD team is bringing a selection of historical objects and invites you to dive straight into the research. You can look, ask questions, compare and contribute your own observations. Through conversation with the team, a lively approach to theatre history emerges. You don’t need any prior knowledge of theatre history – just curiosity.
