Esther Bialas

Esther Bialas, born in Hamburg in 1969, studied costume design at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg under Prof. Dirk von Bodisco and Prof. Marianne Stromberg. Her career began in 1996 in the off-theatre scene in Berlin and Hamburg. Her numerous costume designs for drama director Nicolas Stemann shaped the aesthetics of the Hamburg School in the 2000s. Since assisting Wilfried Minks and co-founding the independent theatre collective LaborLavache, she has also worked as a stage designer. The collective has won several awards and led Esther Bialas as a set designer to Marthaler's Schauspielhaus Zurich and subsequently to the Burgtheater Vienna, Deutsches Theater Berlin, Thalia Theater Hamburg and the Theater Basel, among others. Various productions by the Stemann group, including world premieres by Elfriede Jelinek, were invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen, the Salzburg Festival and the Ruhrtriennale. This was followed by cross-genre productions at major opera houses. For the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus in 2019, Esther Bialas also developed an augmented reality performance with the Berlin music theatre company Nico and The Navigators in the Dessau Masters' Houses. She works closely with directors such as Stefan Herheim, Martin G. Berger, Daniel Kramer, Sigrid Strøm Reibo, Christiane Pohle and Barrie Kosky. She has been named costume designer of the year several times by the trade journal Theater heute and received the first prize at the Impulse Theatre Festival Hamburg in 2000, along with a number of other prizes.
Esther Bialas created the costume design for Barrie Kosky's successful production of "The Magic Flute" (Mozart).
