Killian Farrell

Described as a “firework of drama and poetry,” by the Neue Musikzeitung, conductor Killian Farrell has been Generalmusikdirektor at the Staatstheater Meiningen since the 2023/24 season. He is a regular guest conductor at many of Germany's major opera houses, including the Semperoper Dresden, the Staatsoper Hamburg, and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, where he recently conducted the new productions of “The Lighthouse” (Davies) and “Dido and Aeneas” (Purcell). He has a particularly close connection with the Staatsoper Stuttgart, where he was Kapellmeister and has since frequently appeared as a guest. Prior to his engagement in Stuttgart, he was Kapellmeister and Assistant to the Generalmusikdirektor at the Theater Bremen from 2017, becoming First Kapellmeister there from the 2019/20 season.
Farrell is a regular guest conductor with symphony orchestras around the world. Engagements for the current season take him to the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Deutsche Radiophilharmonie. He also enjoys close relationships with all the major orchestras in his native Ireland.
Farrell comes from Dublin, Ireland, and received a comprehensive musical education from an early age. He is a former Deputy Head Chorister of the Palestrina Choir at Dublin Cathedral and made his professional conducting debut at the age of 17 with a performance of Bach's St. John Passion. He studied musicology at Trinity College in Dublin and completed his training as an accompanist at the National Opera Studio in London.
