Zinovy Margolin

The stage designer Zinovy Margolin was born in Belarus. He was awarded the Golden Mask for his stage design of Janáček's "Jenufa" and "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg", the musical based on the musical film by Jacques Demy. He regularly works with director Vasily Barkhatov. Together they have staged productions such as Offenbach's "Les Contes d'Hoffmann", Verdi's "La fanciulla del West", Gounod's "Faust", Dvořák's "Rusalka" and, among others, Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin", Berlioz's "La Damnation de Faust" as well as Mussorgsky's "Khovanshchina", Prokofiev's "The Gambler" and Puccini's "Madama Butterfly". At the Mariinsky and Bolshoi Theatres, his stage designs have been seen in a number of productions, including Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde", Shostakovich's "The Nose", Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro", Rossini's "Il barbiere di Siviglia", Verdi's "Otello" and Tchaikovsky's "Mazepa", among others. At the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, he designed a spectacular spatial concept for the new production of Zimmermann's "Die Soldaten" in the 2015/2016 season, and in 2016/17 he also created the stage for Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" in a co-production with the Royal Opera Stockholm. For the world premiere of Reimann's opera "L' Invisible" he was engaged at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where he was a guest again in 2023 for the scenic realisation of Verdi's "Simon Boccanegra". He was also responsible for the stage design of Puccini's "Tosca" at the Hanover State Opera and Korngold's "Die tote Stadt" at the Novaya Opera in Moscow.
At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Zinovy Margolin designed the stage for Vasily Barkhatov's production of Wagner's "Der fliegende Holländer".
