Davy Cunningham

Davy Cunningham, born in Scotland in 1989, initially studied philosophy at the University of Stirling. In 2011, he made his debut as a lighting designer at the National Theatre of Scotland in Glasgow, followed by an international career over the years. He has created the lighting design for more than 250 opera productions in the UK, as well as in over 26 countries for many of the most prestigious opera companies in Europe, Australia and North America. His work includes large-scale lighting installations (for over 25 years for the Bregenz Festival), as well as intimate atmosphere-creating designs for Mozart performances at Vienna's Schönbrunn Palace, among others. He has worked regularly for the Dundee Rep Theatre, the Rapture Theatre Company in Glasgow, the Druid Theatre Company in Galway, the Gate Theatre and the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, opera and theater companies in Perm, Russia, West End and Broadway productions in London and New York, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the English National Theatre, and numerous regional companies in the UK. He also realized his lighting designs at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. Davy Cunningham regularly works with directors such as Robert Carsen, David Pountney, Guy Joosten, Rolando Villazón, Olivier Tambosi and Philipp Himmelmann. In Germany, for example, his lighting design can be seen at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the Semperoper Dresden, the Leipzig Opera, the Hamburg State Opera and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He is a laureate of the Bohuslav Martinů Society in the Czech Republic.
At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Davy Cunningham set the Donizetti operas "Don Pasquale" directed by Rolando Villazón and "La fille du régiment" directed by Emilio Sagi into the light.
