Michaela Barth

Born in Munich, costume designer Michaela Barth grew up in Algeria, Saudi Arabia and the Bergisches Land region and trained as a dressmaker after graduating from high school. She moved to Berlin to study clothing design at the University of the Arts, where she has lived ever since and worked for many years on productions for the homeless theatre Ratten 07 and the prison theatre AufBruch in Tegel Prison. Since 1994 she has worked internationally as a costume designer at major theatres with, among others, Herbert Murauer, Philipp Stölzl, Marcel Keller, Elisabeth Rauner, Hans Neuenfels, Armin Petras, Enrico Lübbe, Holk Freytag, Karoline Gruber, Johannes Schütz, Wilhelmine Bauer, Christof Loy, Andres Veiel, Tomo Sugao and David Hermann. She has worked closely with Michael Thalheimer on opera and theatre productions since 2000. In 2007, she created the costume design for Katharina Wagner's production of "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" (Wagner) at the Bayreuth Festival.
At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Michaela Barth designed the costumes for Christof Loy's interpretation of the Monteverdi cycle and "Les Troyens" (Berlioz), David Hermann's production of "Schade, dass sie eine Hure war" (Schreier) as well as for "Otello" (Verdi) directed by Michael Thalheimer, for whom she also created the costume design in Verdi's "Macbeth". In the 2023/24 season, Michaela Barth will present her costume design here for Wagner's "Parsifal" and Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" directed by Michael Thalheimer.
