Johannes Leiacker
Johannes Leiacker, internationally active as a stage and costume designer for opera and drama, was born in Landshut in 1950. After an apprenticeship as a carpenter and studies in design in Wiesbaden, his first stage stop was the Schauspiel Frankfurt. This was followed by work at all the major theaters in Germany. He has also designed sets and costumes for all the leading German opera houses, as well as for the opera houses in Amsterdam, Antwerp, Barcelona, Brussels, Helsinki, London, Copenhagen, Lyon, Zurich, the Teatro Real de Madrid, the Vienna State Opera, the Opéra National in Paris, the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, the Los Angeles Opera, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Tokyo Nikkai Opera and for the Bregenz, Tyrol and Salzburg Festivals, among others. In 1984, Johannes Leiacker received the Kunstförderpreis of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1996, 2009 and 2018, he was voted Stage Designer of the Year by Opernwelt magazine, in 2010 he was awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for the set of Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and in 2021 he received the Phoenix Award from the Semperoper Foundation. From 2004 to 2010 he held a professorship for stage design and costumes at the Dresden University of Fine Arts. A continuous collaboration connects him with the directors Peter Konwitschny and Christof Loy. He has also worked with Guy Joosten, Josef Ernst Köpplinger and Dietrich W. Hilsdorf.
At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Johannes Leiacker designed, among other things, the stage and costume design for Puccini's "Tosca" directed by Dietrich W. Hilsdorf as well as the stage space for Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" directed by Rolando Villazón.
