“Make love, not war” could be the motto of Marie, the protagonist of Donizetti’s opéra comique ‘La Fille du Régiment’ and the supplier with whom the entire 21st regiment has fallen in love. She, however, only has eyes for the young Tyrolean Tonio. Even when Marie’s mother, a Marquise, recognises the former foundling and takes her away to her castle to marry her off in accordance with her new status, Marie cannot forget her Tonio. And he is soon able to win back his soldier’s bride when he reveals Marie’s “past” in noble society.
In this work composed in Paris, Donizetti captured French taste perfectly. With his witty and dazzling music he created an exemplary piece of musical humour.
