Female characters on stage
Butterfly, Traviata & Co
They are icons, tragic lovers, outsiders, rebels – and often meet a dramatic end: the female heroines of ballet and opera are as complex as they are contradictory, and shaped by the perspectives of their (male) creators.
This season, the new post-performance discussion series “Female Characters on Stage” focuses on six representative women from the repertoire. Following selected performances, we invite you to a follow-up discussion to explore the performances in relation to these characters. What role models are reflected in these women? Where do they break with the conventions of their time? How are they perceived and interpreted today? A journey of discovery exploring the powerful, vulnerable and unforgettable prima donnas on stage.
