Female characters on stage

They are loved, celebrated and idealised, betrayed and cursed – and in the end, they are usually dead. The famous female protagonists of the opera repertoire, with their unforgettable fates, are not only moving characters on stage; they also reflect the perspectives of the era in which they were created, are shaped by the decisions of the (often male) librettists, composers and directors, and, through their live staging, also become a mirror of the present.

The new post-performance discussion series “Women Characters on Stage” is open to all questions, observations and discussions relating to the portrayal of women in opera, and invites those interested to gather in the foyer after selected performances to share their thoughts on the experience. The guests leading the discussions will be the writer, journalist and cultural studies scholar Mithu Sanyal, and Hanna Werth, Professor of Stage and Intimacy Coordination at the Robert Schumann University of Music in Düsseldorf.

The discussion will take place in the Rangfoyer (Düsseldorf Opera House) or the Opernfoyer (Duisburg Theatre) immediately after the performance. No prior registration is required to attend. Admission is free.
