John Matthew Myers
Tenor John Matthew Myers, a native of Southern California, graduated from the Manhattan School of Music, was a Gerdine Young Artist at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, an Apprentice Artist at the Santa Fe Opera, a graduate of the Verbier Festival Academy, and a scholarship recipient at the Music Academy of the West. At the 2022 Wigmore Hall Bollinger International Song Competition, he won third prize and the Richard Tauber Prize for the best interpretation of Schubert songs.
In the 2024-2025 season, Myers will sing Handel's Messiah with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under Manfred Honeck and with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. He will also return to the Grant Park Music Festival to sing Mahler's Symphony No. 8, to the Oregon Symphony as tenor soloist in Mendelssohn's “Lobgesang”, and to the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the role of Waldemar in Schoenberg's “Gurrelieder” under the baton of Zubin Mehta.
Highlights of Myers' extensive opera repertoire include Cavaradossi in Tosca (Puccini), Don Jose in “Carmen” (Bizet), Cassio in “Otello” (Verdi), Trin in “La Fanciulla del West” (Puccini), Valerio in “Virginia” (Mercadantes), and the Emperor in “Die Frau ohne Schatten” (Strauss). At the Metropolitan Opera, Myers has sung in productions such as “Peter Grimes” (Britten), “Die Meistersinger” (Wagner), “Pique Dame” (Tchaikovsky), “Der Rosenkavalier” (Strauss), and “Hamlet” (Dean).
Myers has appeared as a soloist in Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and Mozart's Mass in C minor with the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra, Handel's “Messiah” with the New York Philharmonic, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Mahler's “Das Lied von der Erde” with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, Mahler's Symphony No. 8 with the Canterbury Choral Society, Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and with the Cameristi della Scala at the Teatro alla Scala, Britten's “War Requiem” with the Oratorio Society of New York at Carnegie Hall and the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music with the Wexford Festival Orchestra, Mendelssohn's “Elijah” with the Fairfield Chorale, and Brahms' “Liebeslieder-Walzer” with Performance Santa Fe.
At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, he can be seen in the role of Florestan in Beethoven's “Fidelio.”
