Since the Kinderchor der Deutschen Oper am Rhein was founded during the 2008/09 season under the direction of Karoline Philippi, it has become a permanent fixture in the life of Theater Duisburg. Both girls and boys have been able to gain their first experience of appearing on stage in numerous concerts as well as their own productions such as Steve Pogson’s ‘Persephone’, Britten’s ‘The Little Sweep’ and Josef Gabriel Rheinberger’s ‘The Magic Word’. Highlights include performing in Mahler’s 8th Symphony under conductor Lorin Maazel in 2010 and the New Year’s Day concert in the Philharmonie Mercatorhalle under Jonathan Darlington. Their appearance in ‘Carmen’ was their first great challenge on an opera stage. Sabina López Miguez has been the Chorus’s Artistic Director since the beginning of the 2014/15 season.
New members of the Kinderchor am Rhein are welcome at any time. Children from the age of six are gently introduced to singing collectively in the Pre-Chorus, while the big ones aged ten and over are given acting training as well as voice coaching in the Main Chorus. All young adults aged 16 and over are welcome to sing with our Young Chorus.
