Marcelo Gomes

Brazilian-born Marcelo Gomes received his early training in Rio de Janeiro before continuing his studies in the United States after winning the Revelation Prize at the Festival de Dança de Joinville (1993). He trained at the HARID Conservatory as well as at the schools of Boston Ballet, Houston Ballet, and Cuballet under Alicia Alonso. His awards include the Prix de Lausanne (1996) and the Prix Benois de la Danse (2008).
From 1997 to 2017, he was a Principal Dancer with American Ballet Theatre, performing leading roles in the full-length classical repertoire. As a guest artist, he appeared with companies including The Royal Ballet, Mariinsky Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Tokyo Ballet, and New York City Ballet.
As a choreographer, he has created works for American Ballet Theatre, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, and Washington Ballet, among others. He made his debut at the Semperoper in 2018/19, became First Soloist and Ballet Master in 2020/21, later Artistic Advisor and Co-Artistic Director of Semperoper Ballett. Since the 2025/26 season, he has led the ballet masters of the Vienna State Ballet.
