Despite having spent only a few years on opera stages around the world, Maria Gulik must undoubtedly be recognised as a true dramatic mezzo-soprano who has mastered the leading roles of her repertoire. Before turning to singing, Maria Gulik was a stage actress. After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree from the Academy of Theatre Arts in Moscow in 2007, she was a member of the theatre company “The Laboratory of Dmitry Krymov” until 2014 and appeared in numerous productions, many of which went on worldwide tours. From 2011 to 2014, she was involved in the Baryshnikov Arts Centre’s production of “In Paris”, whose guest performances took her to Helsinki, Groningen, Spoleto, Paris, Tel Aviv and the USA.
At the same time, Maria Gulik decided to devote herself to singing as well and studied with Badri Maissuradze and Galina Vishnevskaya at the “Vishnevskaya Opera Centre” in Moscow. In 2015-16, she studied with Dennis O’Neill at the Wales International Academy of Voice in Cardiff, where she completed her master’s degree as an opera singer. Maria Gulik attended further masterclasses with Mirella Freni, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Richard Bonynge.
As a member of the ensemble at Theater Kiel, Maria Gulik has appeared there since the 2020/21 season in productions such as “Aida” (Amneris), “Les Troyens” (Anna), “Madama Butterfly” (Suzuki), “Otello” (Emilia) and “Iolanta” (Marta). In the summer of 2022, she made her role debut as Carmen, also in Kiel. In the summer of 2023, she appeared at the Wernigeröder SchlossFestpiele as Zita in Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi”.
Since August 2023, Maria Gulik has been living in Mainz as a freelance opera singer.
