Maria Kataeva

Soloist
Russian-born mezzo-soprano Maria Kataeva studied singing, piano and choral conducting in St. Petersburg and graduated in 2012. Before joining the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in 2013, she was already a member of the local opera studio during her studies. She has won awards at numerous international singing competitions, most recently in 2019 at the prestigious Operalia Singing Competition in Prague, where she won the audience prize and 2nd prize from the professional jury. Her repertoire includes roles such as the title role in Bizet's "Carmen", Sesto (Mozart "La clemenza di Tito"), Rosina (Rossini "Il barbiere di Siviglia"), Dorabella (Mozart "Così fan tutte"), Idamante (Mozart "Idomeneo"), Nicklausse (Offenbach "Les Contes d'Hoffmann"), Komponist (R. Strauss "Ariadne auf Naxos"), Hänsel (Humperdinck "Hänsel und Gretel"), Maddalena (Verdi "Rigoletto") as well as Suzuki (Puccini "Madama Butterfly"), Angelina (Rossini "La Cenerentola"), Olga (Tchaikovsky "Eugene Onegin"), Elisabetta (Donizetti "Maria Stuarda"), Ruggiero (Handel "Alcina"), Oktavian (R. Strauss "Der Rosenkavalier") and Sesto (Mozart "La clemenza di Tito"). Guest engagements have taken Maria Kataeva to the Hamburg State Opera, the Semperoper Dresden, the Edmonton Opera in Canada, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the Mariinsky Theatre St. Petersburg, the Opéra Bastille Paris, the Opera Vlaanderen, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Japan and to the Rossini Opera Festival Pesaro. In the 2022/23 season Maria Kataeva will interpret Suzuki and the main role of Jeanne d'Arc in Tchaikovsky's "The Maid of Orleans" at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein.
