Michael Kantrowitsch

Michael Kantrowitsch first appeared on stage as a singer, clarinetist, actor and multiple prize winner of the “Jugend musiziert” competition. There he quickly recognised the potential of lighting design as a visual multiplier of music and thus began his career in theatre. While studying lighting design at HAWK Hildesheim, his lighting designs for stage, TV, festivals, concerts and productions for the automotive industry took him to the USA, China, Japan, Azerbaijan and throughout Europe. He demonstrated his versatility in theatre (including “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at the Wolfgang Borchert Theater in Münster) as well as in lighting for Art Basel, the Splash Festival and TV productions for ARD, BR and UEFA. Kantrowitsch coordinated and staged productions at the Harpa Icelandic Philharmonic in Reykjavik and at the Palau National in Barcelona, where he worked with the Bavarian Philharmonic Orchestra and Montserrat Caballé, in the areas of moving images, lighting and special effects. Since 2014, he has been working for ballet director Ivan Liška as lighting designer for the Junior Company of the Bavarian State Ballet: the Bavarian Junior Ballet Munich, with which he travelled to Israel on tour in 2022. Kantrowitsch also designed the lighting for the new production of “Das triadische Ballett” (Oscar Schlemmer, choreography by Gerhard Bohner) and for international ballet festivals in Tbilisi, Georgia (2024) and Nervi, Italy (2025). Dynamic architectural lighting for football stadiums and water parks are permanent installations by the lighting designer. At the Light Art Festival in Husum, Kantrowitsch combined architecture, poetry, music, light and moving images into a total work of art as curator and lighting designer in 2024 and 2025. With “Giulio Cesare in Egitto”, Kantrowitsch breathes life into Rifail Ajdarpasic's expansive, dynamic stage design and lends Michaela Dicus' production visual radiance.
