Stefan Heidemann, appointed Kammersänger in 2003, studied in Hanover and received his first permanent engagement at the Staatstheater Nürnberg. Subsequent engagements have taken the baritone to Saarbrücken, Wiesbaden, Mannheim, Graz, Linz, Vienna, Granada, Tokyo, Taipei and the three Berlin opera houses. Since 1991 he has been engaged at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and has celebrated successes here, for example, as Papageno (Mozart's "Die Zauberflöte"), Herr Fluth (Nicolai's "Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor"), Förster (Janáček's "Das schlaue Füchslein"), Ford (Verdi's "Falstaff"), Wolfram von Eschenbach (Wagner's "Tannhäuser"), Beckmesser (Wagner's "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg"), Geisterbote (R. Strauss "Die Frau ohne Schatten"), Alfio (Mascagni "Cavalleria rusticana"), Don Estoban (Zemlinsky "Der Zwerg"), music teacher (R. Strauss "Ariadne auf Naxos"), Sharpless (Puccini "Madama Butterfly"), Gellner (Catalani "La Wally"), Telramund (Wagner "Lohengrin"), Count Tomski (Tchaikovsky "Pique Dame") and as Alberich (Wagner "Der Ring des Nibelungen"), among others. In J. Strauss' (son) "Die Fledermaus" he was seen over the years as Dr. Falke, Gabriel von Eisenstein and as prison warden Frank. In 2007 he made his debut in the heavy baritone fach at the Lübeck Theatre as Wotan/Wanderer in Wagner's "Ring" cycle. This production was released on DVD and was awarded the Echo Klassik Prize 2012. Subsequent guest appearances include Wotan (Wagner's "Die Walküre") in São Paulo, Kurwenal (Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde") in Toulouse, Dr Schön (Berg's "Lulu") in Santiago de Chile and in 2023 in Klagenfurt as Alberich in Wagner's "Siegfried", where he will again be guesting as Alberich in 2023/24.
At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Stefan Heidmann will again take on roles in "Turandot" (Puccini), "Iwein Löwenritter" (Eggert) and "Cavalleria rusticana", and will be on stage as Peter in Humperdinck's "Hänsel und Gretel" and as President Chamoix in the new production of "Fairy Tale of the Grand Hotel" (Abraham).
