Lucia Ronchetti

Italian composer Lucia Ronchetti, born in Rome in 1963, studied composition at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia and philosophy at the university in her home city. In Paris, she attended composition seminars with Gérard Grisey, took part in the IRCAM annual course in 1997 and received her doctorate in musicology from the École Pratique des Hautes Études at the Sorbonne in 1999. In 2005, she accepted Tristan Murail's invitation to the Music Department at Columbia University in New York as a Visiting Professor and a Fulbright Fellowship. She has been composer in residence several times, including at the International Artists' House Villa Concordia in Bamberg, the Yaddo Artists' Colony in Saratoga Springs, USA, the Staatstheater Stuttgart, the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, USA, the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart and at Schloss Werdenberg (Switzerland). Lucia Ronchetti's work ranges from operas and chamber operas to choral operas and music-theatrical experiments without a stage. From 2012 to 2015, she realised a music theatre project spanning three seasons as part of a co-production between the Semperoper Dresden and the Oper Halle. Her opera "Esame di mezzanotte" premiered in 2015 at the Nationaltheater Mannheim and was named premiere of the year 2015 by the professional journal Opernwelt. Her compositions have been premiered by renowned ensembles and her numerous music theatre works have been staged at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen, the Staatstheater Braunschweig, the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, the Biennale di Venezia and the Oper Frankfurt, among others. From 1991 to 1995 she was Artistic Director of the multidisciplinary festival Animato in Rome and from 2021 to 2024 she is Artistic Director of the Biennale Musica in Venice. In 2020 she taught composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt as part of an endowed guest professorship.
In the 2023/24 season, Deutsche Oper am Rhein will present Lucia Ronchetti's world premiere of the opera "Das fliegende Klassenzimmer".
