The Russian mezzo-soprano Maria Kataeva studied vocal music, piano and choral direction in St. Petersburg, graduating in 2012. She became a member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein’s Opera Studio in 2011 and has been a full member of the ensemble since 2013/14. She has enjoyed great success here as Angelina (Rossini ‘La Cenerentola’), Elisabetta (Donizetti ‘Maria Stuarda’) and most recently Ruggiero (Handel ‘Alcina’). Her repertoire includes Carmen (Bizet), Sesto (Mozart ‘La clemenza di Tito’), Dorabella (Mozart ‘Così fan tutte’), Idamante (Mozart ‘Idomeneo’), Nicklausse (Offenbach ‘Les Contes d’Hoffmann’), the Composer (Richard Strauss ‘Ariadne auf Naxos’), Hänsel (Humperdinck ‘Hänsel und Gretel’), Maddalena (Verdi ‘Rigoletto’), Melibea (Rossini ‘Il viaggio a Reims’) and Suzuki (Puccini ‘Madama Butterfly’). Guest performances have taken Maria Kataeva to Edmonton Opera, the Bolshoi Theatre Moscow, Opéra Bastille Paris, Opera Vlaanderen, to Geneva, Toulouse and the Semperoper Dresden on numerous occasions. She appeared most recently at the Bolshoi Theatre singing the role of Rosina in Rossini’s ‘Il barbiere di Siviglia’ in the 2021/22 season. She has won prizes at numerous singing competitions, most recently the prestigious Operalia Singing Competition in 2019. Following this, at Placido Domingo’s invitation she sang a gala at the Bolshoi Theatre Moscow, and has performed with his regularly since – most recently in June 2021 with a zarzuela programme in the Stars of the White Nights Gala at the Mariinsky Theatre. This season she can be seen at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein as Rosina (Rossini ‘Il barbiere di Siviglia’) and as Sesto (Mozart ‘La clemenza di Tito’). Future guest engagements include a gala at Mozart Week in Salzburg and performances as Octavian (Richard Strauss ‘Rosenkavalier’) in Tokyo.
