Heide Kastler

Heide Kastler, born in Austria, studied in the master class for textiles at the Academy of Fine Arts in Linz. She has lived in Hamburg since 1990 and has worked internationally as a freelance costume designer since 1994.
Her career as a costume designer began at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg with the production “Sucht/Lust,” directed by Christoph Marthaler. This was followed by work at the Theater Neumarkt in Zurich, the Theater Basel, and the Schauspiel Bonn. In 1997, she began her long-standing artistic collaboration with director Martin Kušej at the Staatstheater Stuttgart with the productions “Die Geier-Wally” and “Gesäubert” by Sarah Kane. This was followed by over 60 joint theater and opera productions, including “Don Giovanni” at the Salzburg Festival, “Höllenangst”, “König Ottokars Glück und Ende”, “Maria Stuart” at the Burgtheater in Vienna and the Salzburg Festival, “Der Menschenfeind” and “Drei Winter” at the Burgtheater in Vienna, “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk” at the Amsterdam Opera, and “Idomeneo” at the Royal Opera House in London. The productions “Glaube und Heimat”, “Der Weibsteufel” (Burgtheater Vienna), and “Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald” (Thalia Theater) were also invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen.

The artist has collaborated with many renowned directors in over 100 theater productions, including at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg, the Thalia Theater Hamburg, the Zurich Opera House, the Basel Opera and Schauspiel Basel, the Schauspielhaus and Opera in Zurich, the Theater Bremen, the Burgtheater in Vienna, the Staatstheater Stuttgart, La Monnaie in Brussels, the Budapest State Opera, the National Opera in Amsterdam, the Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, and the Opéra Bastille in Paris.

From 2005 to 2013, Heide Kastler served as head of costume design at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg. In addition, she taught for several years as a lecturer at the University of Music and Theater in Hamburg and was appointed professor of costume design at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hanover in 2013.
“Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein marks her first artistic collaboration with director Daniel Kramer.
