Cornel Frey

Tenor Cornel Frey received his training with the Lucerne Boys' Choir and with Prof. Jakob Stämpfli at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Bern. Following his studies, he was a member of the Zurich Opera Studio. From 2003 to 2009 he was part of the ensemble of the Wuppertaler Bühnen and from 2009 to 2012 he was engaged by the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich. Guest appearances have taken him to the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Staatstheater Wiesbaden, the Wiener Festwochen, the Styriarte Graz, the Schlossfestspiele Ludwigsburg, the festivals in Lucerne and Schwetzingen (world premiere of "Der Reigen" by Bernhard Lang) and the Budapest Wagner Days under Adam Fischer. Since the 2012/13 season Cornel Frey has been engaged at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, where he has sung roles such as Mime ("Das Rheingold", "Siegfried"), Astrologer (Rimsky-Korsakov "The Golden Cockerel"), Brighella (R. Strauss "Ariadne auf Naxos"), Hexe (Humperdinck "Hänsel und Gretel"), Eisenstein (J. Strauss (son) "Die Fledermaus") and Almaviva (Rossini "Il barbiere di Siviglia"). In the 2022/23 season Cornel Frey can be seen as Mime, Eisenstein, Bardolfo (Verdi "Falstaff"), Ari (Wittenbrink "Comedian Harmonists in Concert"), the Witch and others. He will also give guest performances at Zurich Opera as Monostatos (Mozart "Die Zauberflöte") and at the Budapest Wagner Days under the musical direction of Axel Kober as David (Wagner "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg").
