Cornel Frey, born in Lucerne in 1977, received his training with the Lucerne Singknaben and with Prof. Jakob Stämpfli at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Bern. Following his studies, the tenor was a member of the Zurich International Opera Studio. Before he was engaged at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich until 2012, he was a member of the ensemble of the Wuppertaler Bühnen from 2003 to 2009, where he sang important roles of the Spieltenorfach. Since the 2012/13 season, Cornel Frey has been engaged at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. Here he has recently been heard as Mime (Wagner "Das Rheingold", "Siegfried"), Astrologer (Rimsky-Korsakov "The Golden Cockerel"), Brighella (R. Strauss "Ariadne auf Naxos"), Witch (Humperdinck "Hänsel und Gretel"), Eisenstein (J. Strauss Sohn "Die Fledermaus") and, among other roles, as Almaviva (Rossini "Il barbiere di Siviglia"). Guest engagements have taken him to the Bavarian State Opera, Zurich Opera, the Wiesbaden State Theatre, the Vienna Festival, the Styriarte Graz, the Ludwigsburg Schlossfestspiele, the festivals in Lucerne and Schwetzingen, as well as several times as Mime.
His roles for the 2023/24 season include Lindoro in Rossini's "L'italiana in Algeri" and again Almaviva, Pong (Puccini "Turandot") and Hexe, among others. As Tamino (Mozart's "The Magic Flute") he also makes a guest appearance at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie Liège. www.cornelfrey.com
