The tenor Cornel Frey trained with the Luzerner Singknaben and with Prof. Jakob Stampfli at the Academy of Music and Theatre in Bern. After his studies, he joined the Zurich Opera Studio. From 2003 to 2009 he was an ensemble member at Wuppertaler Bühnen and from 2009 to 2012 he was engaged at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich. Guest performances took him to the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Staatstheater Wiesbaden, the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen, the Wiener Festwochen, Styriarte in Graz, the Schlossfestspiele in Ludwigsburg and to the festivals in Lucerne and Schwetzingen (with the world premiere of ‘Reigen’ by Bernhard Lang).
Cornel Frey has been engaged at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein since the beginning of the 2012/13 season, where he has delighted audiences in roles including Mime (‘Das Rheingold’, ‘Siegfried’), The Astrologer (Rimsky-Korsakov ‘The Golden Cockerel’), Brighella (Richard Strauss ‘Ariadne auf Naxos’), the Witch (Humperdinck ‘Hansel und Gretel’), Pedrillo (Mozart ‘Die Entführung aus dem Serail’), Andres (Berg ‘Wozzeck’) and as Wagner’s Steersman (‘Der fliegende Holländer’) and Eisenstein (Johann Strauss ‘Die Fledermaus’).
