                        Jenůfa
Leoš Janáček
                        Content
A woman, two brothers and a secret child: fate in the mill wheel of small-mindedness

Jenůfa is pregnant. Her lover, the child's father Števa, then wants nothing more to do with her and the promise of marriage he just made to her is quickly forgotten. After Jenůfa has left and given birth to her child in secret, her stepmother, the village sexton, fears for her foster daughter's reputation. She becomes convinced that life without a child would have more of a future for Jenůfa and takes a decision that is as momentous as it is terrible... Between narrow-minded morality and breathtaking impotence, Janáček's most famous opera explores extreme psychological states - relentlessly and without judgement. Tatjana Gürbaca stages another masterpiece by the Czech composer after "Katja Kabanova".
