Alex Gahr

As an architect and stage designer, Alex Gahr operates at the intersection of built space and performing arts. He is particularly interested in site-specific and utopian spatial production: architectures enter into dialogue with narrated history, found contexts, performers, and viewers. (Stage) spaces are transformed or completed. Texts and scores are made habitable.
Alex Gahr initially studied comparative literature. During this time, he completed his first internships as an assistant director at the Burgtheater in Vienna. A growing fascination with (stage) space led him to study architecture at the Vienna University of Technology. His architectural work has been exhibited at Vienna Design Week, the Biennial of Design Ljubljana, and the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna. In 2021, Alex Gahr received the Pfann-Ohmann Prize for Architectural Representation. In 2024, Alex Gahr received a state scholarship for architecture. In 2025, Alex Gahr launched SoBar, a place for exploring sober queer nightlife.
Alex Gahr's stage designs are currently on view at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, the Landestheater St. Pölten, the Theatre National du Luxembourg, and the Theater St. Gallen. “Omelas” is Gahr's second collaboration with Stina Quagebeur.
