James Williams

Repetiteur
James Williams studied singing, piano and conducting at the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity College of Music in London. During this time he completed masterclasses with Richard Bonynge, Simon Keenlyside and John Shirley-Quirk. From 2008 to 2018 he held a lectureship at Trinity College of Music and conducted, among others, the choir of the Old Royal Naval College Chapel in Greenwich in London. From 2016 to 2018 he was Musical Director at Brent Opera, where he conducted productions such as "Macbeth" and "Nabucco" (Verdi) and "Martha" (von Flotow). He has also worked with composers Jonathan Rathbone and Howard Goodall and composed his own works such as "Mass for St. Helen" and songs for voice and piano. As a baritone, James Williams performs in operas and oratorios, and regularly gives recitals with his duo partner Meghan Behiel. In 2019 he was awarded the Carl Nielsen Special Jury Prize at the Copenhagen Song Duo Competition and 2nd prize at the London Song Festival with Roderick Williams. As a répétiteur and coach, he participates in a wide range of projects across Europe, creates song and chamber music recitals and is also a member of the Düsseldorf Lyric Opera. Since the 2020/21 season, James Williams has been working at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein as a solo répétiteur and has also taken over the musical direction of the ballet evening "Come In". In the 2022/23 season he can be seen as pianist in "Swinging Christmas" and Liedmatineen, among others.
