Jorge Espino

Mexican baritone Jorge Espino studied in his hometown of Mexico City and at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia. He continued his training at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he sang the title role in Mozart's "Don Giovanni" in a co-production with Opera Philadelphia in March 2019. He has won awards at numerous singing competitions: in 2018 he reached the semifinals of the Glyndebourne Competition, was a finalist at the Belvedere International Competition in Jurmala, won 2nd prize at the AIMS Competition in Graz, and reached the semifinals of the BBC Cardiff Competition Singer of the World. In December 2020, he won the Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions for the Mexico section. In the 2018/19 season, Jorge Espino became a member of the Opera Studio of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, where he appeared as Marullo (Verdi "Rigoletto"), Wigmaker (R. Strauss "Ariadne auf Naxos") and Prince Yamadori (Puccini "Madama Butterfly"), among others. In 2019/20 he became a permanent member of the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and where he played the role of Figaro (Rossini "Il barbiere di Siviglia"), Prince Yeletsky (Tchaikovsky "Pique Dame"), Sir Riccardo Forth (Bellini "I puritani"), Pâris (Gounod "Roméo et Juliette"), Father Time / The Black Cat (Ravel "L'Enfant et les sortilèges"), Chaim (Weinberg "Masel Tov!"), Moralès (Bizet's "Carmen") and others. In the 2022/23 season, he will appear at Deutsche Oper am Rhein as Belcore (Donizetti's "L'elisir d'amore"), Gawein (Eggert's "Iwein Löwenritter"), Ping (Puccini's "Turandot"), Prince Yamadori, Doctor Malatesta (Donizetti's "Pon Pasquale"), Vitellius (Massenet's "Hérodiade"), and others. He will also be a guest as Ford (Verdi "Falstaff") at the New National Theatre Tokyo.
