Esther Mertel has been a stage manager and assistant director at Deutsche Oper am Rhein since 2011 and is responsible for the scenic rehearsal of many repertoire productions in the current repertoire. In 2009, she completed her vocal studies at the Detmold University of Music and was subsequently engaged in the opera studio at the Landestheater Detmold. In 2012, she completed advanced training in "Music and Theater Management" at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. At the Salzburg Festival in 2014, Esther Mertel was part of the Vienna Philharmonic's music education team and directed the opera camp for "Il trovatore". In 2015, she founded the music theater festival "Summer Night Opera" in West Palatinate. She also contributes to the Schumann Junior Institute at the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf as coordinator and assistant to the executive director.
Since the 2015/16 season, Humperdinck's classic "Hansel and Gretel" can be experienced annually at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Esther Mertel's scenically reworked version. In 2017 and 2019, she also conceived the second and fourth installments of the opera construction set with Malte Arkona.
