Thorsten Grümbel

Bassist Thorsten Grümbel studied singing in Lübeck and Detmold. As prize-winner in several competitions, he moved from the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein to the Frankfurt Opera in 2009 and returned to the ensemble here in 2012. Engagements have taken him to opera houses and concert halls in London, Vienna, Paris, Aix-en Provence, Antwerp, Luxembourg, Kiel, Berlin, Geneva, Leipzig, Hamburg, Cologne, New York, Rouen, Belgrade, Basel, Frankfurt, Dresden, Munich, Barcelona, Prague, Stockholm, Taipei, Wiesbaden, Zurich and to the festivals in Mézières, Montreux, Strasbourg, Savonlinna, Ludwigsburg, Nantes, Schwerin, St. Margarethen and others. Extensive radio, CD and DVD recordings document his versatile work as an opera and concert singer. His extensive repertoire includes the Mozart roles Osmin ("Die Entführung aus dem Serail"), Figaro and Bartolo ("Le nozze di Figaro"), Commendatore ("Don Giovanni") and Sarastro ("Die Zauberflöte"), the Verdi roles Banquo ("Macbeth"), Zaccaria ("Nabucco"), Count Walter ("Luisa Miller"), Fiesco ("Simon Boccanegra"), Sparafucile ("Rigoletto"), Philipp II. ("Don Carlos"), as well as the Wagner roles Landgrave ("Tannhäuser"), Hunding, Fasolt and Fafner ("Der Ring des Nibelungen"), King Heinrich ("Lohengrin"), Gurnemanz ("Parsifal"), Daland ("Der fliegende Holländer"), King Marke ("Tristan und Isolde"), R. Strauss' Count Waldner ("Arabella") and Ochs ("Der Rosenkavalier"), as well as Don Basilio (Rossini's "Il barbiere di Siviglia"), Falstaff (Nicolai's "Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor"), Frank (J. Strauss (Son)'s "Die Fledermaus"), the title role in "Don Pasquale" (Donizetti) and a host of other works from Monteverdi to Hindemith. In the 2022/23 season at Deutsche Oper am Rhein Thorsten Grümbel will once again be seen as the Loudspeaker in Ullmann's "Der Kaiser von Atlantis", as Sarastro, Frank, Fanfner, Daland, Bartolo, as well as the Cardinal in Tchaikovsky's "Die Jungfrau von Orléans", as the Adversary/Wild Man in Eggert's "Iwein Löwenritter" and in song matinees. He is also making a guest appearance as Frank at the Hamburg State Opera.
