Ovidiu Purcel studied in his home country Romania at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca with Marius Vlad Budoiu and won numerous prizes at national competitions. In 2011 the tenor was a member of the opera studio of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and has been part of the ensemble here since the 2012/13 season. His repertoire includes roles such as Tamino (Mozart "The Magic Flute"), Ferrando (Mozart "Così fan tutte"), Don Ottavio (Mozart "Don Giovanni"), Roméo (Gounod "Roméo et Juliette"), Alfredo Germont (Verdi "La traviata"), Edgardo (Donizetti "Lucia di Lammermoor"), Paolino (Cimarosa "Il matrimonio segreto"), Nemorino (Donizetti "L'elisir d'amore"), Macduff (Verdi "Macbeth"), Ernesto (Donizetti "Don Pasquale"), Fenton (Verdi "Falstaff"), Rinuccio (Puccini "Gianni Schicchi") and Sellem (Stravinsky "The Rake's Progress"). Guest engagements have taken Ovidiu Purcel to Prague and Tel Aviv, to the Romanian National Opera in Cluj and the Opéra Garnier in Paris, to the Dortmund Theatre, the National Theatre in Prague and regularly as Alfredo Germont to the Leipzig Opera. Under the direction of Kent Nagano, he interpreted Verdi's "Requiem" with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal. He made his debut at the Bregenz Festival in 2021 as Duca di Mantova (Verdi "Rigoletto"). At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Ovidiu Purcel was most recently heard as Pinkerton (Verdi "Madama Butterfly"), Alfred (J. Strauss Sohn "Die Fledermaus") and Edgardo. His roles for the 2023/24 season are Lensky (Tchaikovsky "Eugene Onegin"), Singer (R. Strauss "Der Rosenkavalier") and Pinkerton.
