Ilaria Lanzino

Ilaria Lanzino, born in Pisa, first studied opera singing. She then studied German at the Ca' Foscari University in Venice. The director, who was awarded first place in the prestigious European Opera Directing Prize in 2020, gained her first theatre experience as a chorister at the Theater an der Wien. She then worked as an assistant at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, Theater Dortmund and Aalto Theater Essen, among others. She has worked with directors such as Christof Loy, Benedikt von Peter, Jens-Daniel Herzog, Elisabeth Stöppler, David Bösch, Dietrich Hilsdorf, Axel Köhler and Michael Thalheimer. She made her directorial debut in 2017 at the Theater Dortmund with the children's opera "Wunderland" (Schreier). From 2017 to 2022 Ilaria Lanzino was assistant director at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, where she directed productions such as "Gold!" (Evers), "Meister Pedros Puppenspiel" (de Falla), "Der Kaiser von Atlantis" (Ullmann) and Diana Syrse's world premiere "Der Kiosk". She has also staged "Kirsas Musik" (Tidrow) at the Dortmund Theatre, "Pimpinone" (Telemann), "Duke Bluebeard's Castle" (Bartók), "L'elisir d'amore" (Donizetti) and "Talestri - Queen of the Amazons" (Walpurgis) at the Nuremberg State Theatre, and "Die Prinzessin auf der Amazonen" (Walpurgis) at the Coburg State Theatre. The Princess on the Pumpkin" (Fister) and Verdi's "Falstaff", at the Teatr Wielki Poznan "Straszny dwór" and "Jawnuta" by Moniuszko and at the Theater an der Wien "La liberazione" (Caccini). For reasons of sustainability and in the tradition of physical theatre, Ilaria Lanzino does without as many sets as possible and creates the theatrical evening mainly from the liveliness of her performers' bodies - an artistic aspiration that she has also been implementing as a lecturer for scenic teaching at the Hochschule für Musik in Würzburg since summer 2022.
The Deutsche Oper am Rhein is currently presenting Ilaria Lanzino's interpretation of Lucia Ronchetti's premiere of "Das fliegende Klassenzimmer".
