The Brazilian Joao Miranda studied dance at the Escola do Teatro Bolshoi in Brazil, at the Miami City Ballet School and as a scholarship holder of the Birgit Keil Dance Foundation at the Akademie des Tanzes Mannheim. In the 2015/16 season, he was a member of the ballet studio at the Staatsballett Karlsruhe, moving to the ensemble of the Badisches Staatstheater the following year. In the 2018/2019 season, ballet director Birgit Keil appointed him as a soloist and winner of the Young Star Ballet Award.
He danced there in “Giselle” and “A Million Kisses to my Skin” by David Dawson, in “Concerto” as well as Benvolio in “Romeo and Juliet” by Kenneth MacMillan, the water sprite Vodník in Jiří Bubeníček's new creation “Rusalka”, in “Swan Lake” and “After the Rain” by Christopher Wheeldon. His repertoire also includes works such as Hans van Mannen's “Große Fuge”, “The Suit” by Cathy Marston, “Requiem for a Rose” by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, “Voluntaries” by Glen Tetley and “Deviations” by Stina Quagebeur. Bridget Breiner also created the role of “Freddie” for him in “Das Mädchen und der Nussknacker”. Since the 2024/25 season, Joao Miranda has been a member of the Ballet am Rhein, where he has expanded his repertoire to include the solo role in Mthuthuzeli November's “Invocation”, George Balanchine's “Rubies”, David Dawson's “Empire Noir”, and Richard Siegal's “La Valse”.
