Dieter Richter

Stage and Costume Designer
Dieter Richter studied stage and costume design at the Mozarteum Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Salzburg. He then worked as an assistant on productions by Harry Kupfer and Willy Decker at the Cologne Opera and has been working freelance as a stage designer since 1990. His work has taken him to numerous prestigious opera houses and theaters, including the Komische Oper Berlin, the Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, ​​the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Schauspiel and Oper Bonn, the Wiesbaden and Nuremberg State Theatres, the Sydney Opera House, the Opéra National de Bordeaux, the Hanover State Opera, the Vienna State Opera, the Frankfurt and Leipzig Operas, the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen, the Linz State Theatre, and the Aalto Theatre Essen. He has received numerous nominations for Best Stage Designer in annual critics' polls and was nominated for Best Designer at the 2018 International Opera Awards in London. He has collaborated with director Dietrich W. Hilsdorf on many of his productions.

At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Dieter Richter designed the stage sets for Henze's "Phaedra," Stravinsky's "The Rake's Progress," Wagner's "Lohengrin", Richard Strauss's "Ariadne auf Naxos", and Nicolai's "The Merry Wives of Windsor". From 2017 to 2019, he also designed the stage sets for Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen", directed by Dietrich W. Hilsdorf, followed by Bellini's "I puritani", directed by Rolando Villazón.
