Rita Kapfhammer studied singing at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich with Reri Grist and Jan Hendrick Rootering. From 1997, the mezzo-soprano was a permanent member of the ensemble at Theater Ulm for ten years. For the 2007/2008 season, she moved to the ensemble of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich. There she made her debut in the title role of Bizet's “Carmen,” among other roles. This was followed by a permanent engagement at the Anhaltisches Staatstheater Dessau from the 2012/13 season, where she appeared in Wagner's “Der Ring des Nibelungen” as Fricka, Erda, Waltraute, Erste Norn, and Floßhilde, inter alia. In the 2023/24 season, she became a member of the ensemble of the Nationaltheater Mannheim, where she appeared on stage as Frau von Luber (Weill's “Der Silbersee”) and as the Sorceress (Purcell's “Dido and Aeneas”), among other roles. Kapfhammer also makes regular guest appearances at the Staatstheater Meiningen, the Staatstheater Nürnberg, the Leipzig Opera, and the Theater Münster. In addition to opera, she has an extensive concert repertoire and sings almost all the important roles in her field.

In the 2025/26 season at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Rita Kapfhammer will appear as Golde (Bock's “Anatevka”), Third Lady (Mozart's “Die Zauberflöte”), Gertrud (Humperdinck's “Hänsel and Gretel”), Marcelline (Mozart's “Le nozze di Figaro”), Schwertleite (Wagner's “Die Walküre”), Margret (Berg's “Wozzeck”) and Giganta in the children's opera “Die blaue Sau” (Schreier).
