Time is a strange thing. - An opulent rush of sound in a nostalgic ambience.
Comedy for music in three acts
Text by Hugo von Hofmannsthal
In German with surtitles
approx. 4 ½ hours, two intervals
For all from 14 upwards
Sending out a youthful cavalier with a silver rose as a courtship is dangerous - especially if you are past your prime as a client. Young Sophie promptly falls in love with the rose cavalier Octavian, who is supposed to woo Sophie on behalf of the much older Baron Ochs von Lerchenau. But Octavian has just had a crush on the beautiful field marshal...

In 1912, Richard Strauss and the poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal created a comedy that, with its musical splendour and scenic opulence, became a swan song to the old world. Otto Schenk staged "Rosenkavalier" in picturesquely nostalgic images that still make us forget the time as a "strange' thing".
