Elisabeth Stöppler

Director
The director Elisabeth Stöppler first studied piano as a young student in her hometown of Hanover. This was followed by acting studies in Rome and studies in music theatre directing in Hamburg with Götz Friedrich, Peter Konwitschny, Christine Mielitz and Peter Mussbach, among others. From 2001 to 2003 she was a scholarship holder at the Akademie Musiktheater Heute and in 2003 received the Deutsche Bank Foundation Prize. She has directed productions at the Hamburg State Opera, the Oldenburg State Theatre, the Weimar National Theatre, the Chemnitz Theatre, the Hanover and Berlin State Operas and the Graz Opera, among others. At the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen, Elisabeth Stöppler staged the Benjamin Britten cycle "Trilogy of Outsiders", among many other works, and was awarded the Götz Friedrich Prize and the Förderpreis NRW for "Peter Grimes". The director, who is particularly committed to contemporary music theatre, also has an ongoing collaboration with the Semperoper Dresden. At Oper Frankfurt, she realised the world premiere of Peter Eötvös' "The Golden Dragon", which was invited to the Bregenz Festival. Her interpretation of Wagner's "Götterdämmerung" at the Chemnitz Theatre was awarded the German Theatre Prize DER FAUST in 2019. From 2014 to 2022 she was house director at the Staatstheater Mainz.
At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Elisabeth Stöppler presents her directing of "Christmas Oratorio - Scenes from a Sleepless Night" (J.S. Bach) and Tchaikovsky's "The Maid of Orleans".
