Born in Budapest, Sylvia Hamvasi studied at the Ferenc Liszt Academy in her hometown. She began her career as a soloist performing Bach cantatas, Handel oratorios, and other Baroque pieces under the baton of György Vashegyi. With the Hungarian Radio Orchestra, conducted by Tamas Vasary, she sang in live concerts in Budapest (e.g., Mozart's Mass in C minor, Brahms' Requiem), which were recorded for the radio archive. She also gave a recital at London's Wigmore Hall with songs by Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms.
She made her opera debut as Gilda (Verdi's “Rigoletto”) and Pamina (Mozart's “Die Zauberflöte”) at the Hungarian State Opera and won several prizes at international singing competitions such as Lucia Popp, Francesco Vignas, and Placido Domingo. As a member of the ensemble, she performed at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in important Mozart roles, among others. In addition to concert tours throughout Europe, guest engagements have taken her to the Hamburg State Opera, the Frankfurt Opera, the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Bonn, Wuppertal, the Spoleto Festival, Tokyo, and the Bern Opera, inter alia. Most recently, in September 2025, she sang “Elsa” (Wagner's “Lohengrin”) to great acclaim in Weiwuying, Taiwan (National Kaohsiung Center) under the baton of Wen-Pin Chien.

In the 2025/26 season, Hamvasi will appear at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein as Katja (Janáček's “Katja Kabanova”), Angelica (Puccini's “Suor Angelica”), Countess Almaviva (Mozart's “Le nozze di Figaro”), Micaëla (Bizet's “Carmen”), Liù (Puccini's “Turandot”) and as part of the „Rendezvous mit Balkan Brass".
