Fleeing a giant snake leaves Prince Tamino distraught and unconscious. Three ladies rush courageously to help the fainted prince. But when he regains consciousness, it is the bird-catcher Papageno, rather than them, who boasts grandly of having slain the monster. The Queen of the Night tasks the unlikely pair with freeing her daughter Pamina from the clutches of the supposed tyrant Sarastro. For protection, she gives them a magic flute and a glockenspiel to take with them. Three wise boys lead them to Sarastro’s castle, where they find Pamina – and must face a series of adventurous trials.

It is the opera of all operas: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”, composed in 1791, is as fantastical as it is profound, as entertaining as it is symbolic, and a real eye-catcher in Barrie Kosky’s iconic multimedia production.
