In the pale light of a candle, the poet Hoffmann revisits the unhappy loves of his past in his mind's eye: The docile Olympia, who turns out to be an automaton. The gloomy Antonia, who is carried off by her own singing due to a mysterious illness. And finally, the passionate courtesan Giulietta, who steals Hoffmann's reflection on behalf of the sinister Dapertutto and even tempts him to commit murder...
In his last opera, which remains a fragment, Jacques Offenbach created a parable of artistic creativity and failure based on stories by E.T.A. Hoffmann. Four different directorial languages bring Hoffmann's bizarre and fantastical tales to life at the Rheinoper: the British theatre collective "1927", whose multimedia productions have already made Barrie Kosky's "Die Zauberflöte" a global success; the Australian puppeteer Neville Tranter with his life-size, bizarre folding mouth puppets; the Dutch choreographer Nanine Linning, in whose work different arts flow into one another; and finally director Tobias Ribitzki, who imaginatively connects the different parts.
