From 1997 to 2004, he worked as an assistant director at the Stuttgart State Opera under Klaus Zehelein. There he collaborated with directors such as Jossi Wieler and Hans Neuenfels. He has staged numerous musical theater works—repertoire operas from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern periods, as well as operettas, musicals, and world premieres—at municipal and state theaters in Freiburg, Augsburg, Aachen, Altenburg-Gera, Baden-Baden, Bonn, Bern, Bielefeld, Coburg, Krefeld-Mönchengladbach, Lucerne, Osnabrück, Oldenburg, Zurich, the Semperoper Dresden, and the Staatsoper Stuttgart, as well as the Easter Festival in Baden-Baden. Behr was a scholarship holder of the Akademie Musiktheater heute (Deutsche Bank Foundation) and the Akademie Schloss Solitude. He was awarded the Götz Friedrich Prize for his production of Bruno Maderna's Hyperion. He taught stage direction at the University of Augsburg, the HfM Saar, and, since 2015, at the HfMDK Frankfurt. In addition, he conducted musical theater workshops and projects for the Young Opera of the Stuttgart State Opera (JOiN). While working, he completed training as a mediator (business) at Steinbeis University Stuttgart and further training in theater and music management at LMU Munich. Since the 2023/24 season, he has been engaged by the Young Opera of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein.
In the 2024/25 season, he staged “Holle!” by Sebastian Schwab, Kai Weßler & Suse Pfister. The current season will see the musical theater production for children aged 6 and up, “So oder so oder so”.
