Gustavo Carvalho

Dancer
After training at the Brazilian Conservatory of Dance, Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian Gustavo Carvalho started dancing solo roles for the Brazilian Ballet Company at the age of 15. In 2010, he won three Gold Medals at the Joinville Dance Festival (Brazil) and the Bronze Medal at the 3rd Beijing International Ballet Competition in China. Only one year after joining the National Ballet of Uruguay (Montevideo) in 2014, the artistic director Igor Yebra promoted him to become the company’s principal dancer. Over the last years he has danced a remarkable range of roles including: Basilio in ‘Don Quijote’ (Silvia Bazillis/Raúl Candal), Color in ‘La Bayadere’ (Natalia Makarova), Franz in ‘Coppélia’ (Enrique Martinez), Albrecht in ‘Giselle’ (Sara Nieto), Romeo in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ (Kenneth Macmillan), Prince Siegfried in ‘Swan Lake’ (Raúl Candal), Don José in ‘Carmen’ (Marcia Haydée), Onegin in ‘Onegin’ (John Cranko), Désiré in ‘Sleeping Beauty’ (Mario Galizzi), Des Grieux in ‘Manon’ (Kenneth Macmillan) and many more. He was nominated for the Prix Benois de la Danse for his performance of Don José in Marcia Haydée’s ‘Carmen’ in 2017.
Gustavo Carvalho has been a company member of the Ballett am Rhein since the 2020/21 season and danced the title role in Demis Volpi's "The Nutcracker" andTonda in Volpi's Krabat. He has also danced in Aszure Barton's "Come In", Twyla Tharp's "Commentaries on the Floating World", Hélène Blackburn's "Choleric" and "Don't look at the jar" by Gil Harush. Other roles were Don José in Roland Petit's "Carmen" and second intrudor in Jerome Robbins' "The Cage".
