Torben Jürgens was born in Hagen and studied in Cologne and Essen. After his first permanent engagement at Theater Bielefeld, he became a member of the ensemble at Deutsche Oper am Rhein, where he performed numerous roles from his wide-ranging repertoire. Guest engagements have taken him to the state operas in Munich, Hamburg, and Stuttgart, the Semperoper Dresden, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Teatro Real Madrid, and to festivals such as the Glyndebourne Festival and the Salzburg Festival. As a concert singer, he has performed in renowned concert halls with a versatile repertoire comprising the bass parts of the great sacred works by Bach, Beethoven, Dvořák, Mozart, and Verdi. He has worked with conductors such as Christian Thielemann, Vladimir Jurowski, Asher Fisch, René Jacobs, Michael Sanderling, and Simone Young, and with orchestras such as the Dresden Philharmonic, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic.
In the 2025/26 season, Torben Jürgens will appear at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein as Maestro (Donizetti's “Prima la Mamma!”), Curio (Händel's “Giulio Cesare in Egitto”), Angelotti (Puccini's “Tosca”), Betto di Signa (Puccini's “Gianni Schicchi”), Sarastro (Mozart's “Die Zauberflöte”), and Geppetto/Headmistress/Teacher (Schötz & Meinhold's “Pinocchio”).
