Maria van Hoof

Voice type: mezzo soprano
Mezzo-soprano Maria van Hoof was born in Kyiv. In 2010, she began studying the violin at the Kyiv Academy of Arts, and a year later she took up the piano. Since the start of her singing career, she has successfully participated in several singing competitions and was named best soloist in the choral category at the Ukrainian Bortnyansky Choir Competition in 2018. In the same year, she sang the lead role in G.C. Menotti’s opera “The Lies of Martin”, which was performed for the first time in Ukraine at the Opera Studio of the Kiev Conservatory. In 2020, she graduated from the Academy of Arts with honors.
From 2021, Maria van Hoof studied at the HMT Munich on the Bachelor’s programme in the classes of Prof. Christiane Iven and Prof. Sabine Lahm. In July 2025, Maria van Hoof successfully completed her Bachelor’s degree and began her Master’s studies with Prof. Talia Or.
Her roles to date include Ciesca in Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi” in 2023, Dido in Henry Purcell’s “Dido & Aeneas” in 2024, and the lead role in the opera “Nacht” at the Staatstheater Kassel in 2024. As part of “Musiktheater im Reaktor” in Munich, she sang Donna Elvira in Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” in 2025 and the Drummer in Viktor Ullmann’s “Der Kaiser von Atlantis” in April 2026. In the university project “Opernbus”, Maria van Hoof sang the role of Marcellina in W.A. Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” and, at the renowned Brahms Festival Tutzing in October 2025, Dvořák’s “Requiem”. Since April 2025, she has been a scholarship holder of Yehudi Menuhin’s “Live Music Now” Foundation (LMN München e.V.).
In the coming season, she will join the opera studio of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein.
