100 years of sleep?
The well-known fairy tale about a young princess cursed to sleep for 100 years, surrounded by thorns and roses, has been interpreted in many different ways, from Charles Perrault to the Brothers Grimm to Disney. In the world of ballet, too, ‘Sleeping Beauty’ is considered a milestone in dance history and is being retold by chief choreographer Bridget Breiner: But what is this sleep actually all about?
To accompany our ballet premiere of ‘Sleeping Beauty’, we talk to sleep researcher Alexandra Hinterberger from the Laboratory for Sleep and Consciousness Research about the fascinating world of sleep: Why do we sleep at all? What is behind the so-called ‘Sleeping Beauty syndrome’? What happens in our bodies during sleep, and how does it change in different stages of life? We also ask whether athletes – especially dancers – actually sleep differently.
A conversation that links science, everyday life and art – and promises surprising insights.
