Rolf A. Scheider

Bass-baritone Rolf A. Scheider studied voice at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and at the Cologne University of Music. His work with voice coaches Cornelius Reid (New York) and Carol Bagott-Forte (Canada) had a lasting impact on him. For years, Rolf A. Scheider has performed at numerous theaters in Germany and abroad. Notable examples include: Aachen, Bielefeld, Erfurt, Münster, Theater Hagen, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Wuppertal, Staatstheater Oldenburg, Opera Zuid (Netherlands), Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen, Opernhaus Halle, and many more. In addition to many comic and buffo roles such as Don Magnifico (Rossini’s “La Cenerentola”), Bartolo (Rossini’s “Il barbiere di Siviglia” and Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro”), Jupiter (Offenbach’s “Orpheus in the Underworld”), Obolski (Burkhard’s “Das Feuerwerk”), Sulpice (Donizetti’s “La fille du régiment”), and Zeta (Lehár’s “The Merry Widow”), his repertoire also includes serious roles such as the Broommaker (Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel”), Landgrave Hermann (Wagner’s “Tannhäuser”), Kaspar (Weber’s “Der Freischütz”), Faninal (Strauss’s “Der Rosenkavalier”), Zaccaria (Verdi’s “Nabucco”), Mefistofele (Boito), and Pizarro (Beethoven’s “Fidelio”).
In recent years, there was a unique crossover project of a special kind: Rolf A. Scheider appeared as a guest (singer) on the American television series “Better Late Than Never” and shared the screen with Henry Winkler, William Shatner, Terry Bradshaw, and George Foreman. The episode was broadcast in January 2018 to millions of U.S. television viewers. At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Rolf A. Scheider has already appeared as Sergei Mentschikoff (Lehár’s “The Count of Luxembourg”), Mr. Rifkin (Reynolds’ “The Ghost Knight”), Angelotti (Puccini’s “Tosca”), Justus (Ronchetti’s “The Flying Classroom”), and Lazar Wolf (J. Bock’s “Anatevka”). In the 2026–27 season, he will return to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein as Meister Hermann Ortel (Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg”).
