Tae-Hwan Yun

Tenor Tae Hwan Yun earned his bachelor’s degree in voice from Suwon Hwasung University in South Korea in 2014. He went on to pursue a master’s degree in art song, concert, and opera at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts, studying under Prof. Katharina Dau. He is a multiple prize winner at international vocal competitions: In 2017, he won, among other awards, the Encouragement Prize at the Richard Strauss Competition in Munich; in 2018, he received third prize at the Primo Concorso Lirico Internazionale Giulio Fregosi in Voghera. At the 11th Immling International Vocal Competition in Bad-Endorf in 2019, he was awarded third prize and the Art Song Prize. In addition, he won third prize and the Audience Award at the 2nd International Helmut Deutsch Lied Competition at the Schönbrunn Palace Theater.
From 2018 to 2020, Tae Hwan Yun was a member of the opera studio at the Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern, where he appeared, among other roles, as Harlequin/Soldier in Viktor Ullmann’s "Der Kaiser von Atlantis", Manol in Ludger Vollmer’s “Border,” Gastone in Verdi’s “La traviata,” Iskra in Tchaikovsky’s “Mazeppa", the Second Nazarene in R. Strauss’s “Salome", and Belmonte in the children’s opera version of “The Abduction from the Seraglio” (based on Mozart).
Guest engagements took him to the Landestheater Niederbayern as Lord Cecil in Donizetti’s “Robert Devereux", to the Theater Bonn as Don Riccardo in Verdi’s “Ernani” and the 1st Mandarin in Frankenstein’s “LI-TAI-PE", and he appeared as Goro in Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” at the 2022 Eutin Festival.
In his home region, he also sang the role of Nemorino in Donizetti’s “L’elisir d’amore” and, in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Ferrando in Mozart’s “Così fan tutte". Following various engagements at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, including as Abbé von Chazeuil and Maggiordomo in Cilea’s “Adriana Lecouvreur", the tenor will return to the Rhine in the 2026/27 season as Master Balthasar Zorn (Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg”).
