Who would I be if I had stayed back then?
Chamber play in six scenes
Text by the composer freely adapted from the story "The Jolly Corner" by Henry James

A woman and a man meet again after a long time. Decades have passed during which she became an actress and he a writer, decades after they spent a youth together without ever becoming a couple. Now Osbert Brydon, son of wealthy American merchants, has returned home from Europe to wind up his childhood home. Who would he have become if he had stayed? Would Ellice Staverton have loved this man who stayed? A mental game turns into a painful showdown: in the dark halls of his childhood, he encounters the person his family wanted him to become.
The composer Manfred Trojahn, who lives in Düsseldorf and Paris, is one of the great composers of our time. While his opera "Eurydice - The Lovers, Blind", celebrated in Amsterdam in 2022, grants Eurydice and Orphée only a moment of the shared now after their hesitant acquaintance, here Osbert and Ellice's shared past is inscribed and becomes for him the touchstone of himself and the nature of his love.
